A Manager Pocket Mentor eBook Fred Gandolfi MBA Reviews

A mentor is supposed to enable you to find out what you don't know about yourself - "unconscious incompetence" and this book does exactly that for you. I have read many books on leadership and time management targeted for line managers but this one is special. Authored has nailed down all the management issues at workplace including some controversial ones and offered practical tips and techniques that is helping me become better manager. I recommend both employee and managers to read the book from start to end.
A Manager's Pocket Mentor contains realistic advice on how to
manage people and situations commonly found in most organizations.
Management is frequently difficult and stressful. Gandolfi examines
the difficult choices, the psychological stresses, and provides his
own insights. He also includes others in this book
whose views differ from his own.

His lively, personal style will be irreverent to some but most
readers will find Gandolfi strikes a balance between dry humor and
honest, direct counsel.

His opening section on What is Expected of You as a Manager is
a must read for those starting out in management but also as a refresher
to the veterans. It minces no words. Low performers must be dealt with,
judicious risk taking must be encouraged, and managers must constantly
remind their group that customers come first.

But mostly management is about setting and meeting expectations. He goes
about showing how to do both. One way is through clarifying conversations
with one's employees. As he wisely point out, people will often hear
something other than what you think you said.

The maturity of this book is evident when Gandolfi analyzes issues managers face
from different points of view. In a thoughtful section on value and expense,
he shows that, depending on your perspective, an issue can be seen as both a
value or an expense.

Layoffs and outsourcing are a part of corporate life, and Gandolfi includes his
opinions on these realities. But his book goes further to look at the underlying
fear that these realities bring to the workplace. When people face uncertainty,
they usually become afraid he notes in the section Management as an Agent of Change.
On the other hand, Gandolfi observes, people grow through trauma, education and
experience. They mature with age. They grow especially through negative experiences,
after due reflection.

Are you working on a project going nowhere or avoiding letting someone go? The Power of
Denial is a section in his book that will interest you. You will also be interested in
What Makes a Successful Employee, which is, the willingness of an employee to make
an impact. Gandolfi's goal is to create high performance teams, yet within that
context he reminds those who are managers or aspire to be managers that we all fail
and that forgiveness is a necessary ingredient in a successful team.

If you want a deeper look into the complexities and paradoxes of management,
this book is for you.
This book not only tells you how to be a good manager but also shows you the importance of having a high ethical and moral value.
